AbstractThis study reviewed the literature on the treatment of symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease with artificial disc replacement which has the advantage of motion preservation. This technique is evolving with continuous modifications in the prosthesis design and needs a long term follow up of clinical outcomes. The indications and contraindications of the procedure are being defined and the initial results are comparable to the lumbar fusion with preservation of motion.
