A Study to assess the Knowledge on Colostomy Irrigation Procedure among III Year Bsc (N) Students at Narayana College of Nursing, Nellore

Abstract

Colostomy irrigation is a procedure in which the stoma around the skin is cleansed, bag is complied, and the hygiene is maintained to prevent infection and irritation. It is an operation in which an artificial opening is made into the colon on the anterior abdominal wall to permit the escape of faeces and flatus.

Objectives: assess the level of knowledge on colostomy irrigation among nursing student. To find out the association between the level of knowledge on colostomy irrigation among student nurses with this socio-demographic variables.

Methodology: Non probability convenience sampling technique was adopted for the study. After getting permission from institutional ethical committee, Director NMCH, Nursing dean the main study was conducted among 100 samples. Non probability convenience sampling technique was used for select the sample. Structured questionnaire was developed with 29 questions and it is used to determine the knowledge on colostomy irrigation procedure among III year B.Sc nursing students. Each day 14-15 samples was taken to data collection and 30 minutes was taken place for each sample collection. The total data collection period was 1 week. After conducting the data collection it was entered into coding sheet. The collected data was analysed based on objectives of study. The analysed data was presented in the form of figures and tables.

Result: The study concluded that most of the III year Bsc nursing students having average knowledge regarding colostomy irrigation procedure. There is need to improve the knowledge regarding colostomy irrigation procedure. There was non significant association between the level of knowledge on colostomy irrigation procedure among IIIrd year B.Sc (N) students with their selected socio demographic variables such as age in years, religion, type of diet, source of information and attended any class.

Conclusion: The study was concluded 100 samples of III year Bsc.(N) students in Narayana College of Nursing, 53(53%) had C grade level of knowledge regarding colostomy irrigation procedure. Research suggests that as a health care professional need to educate nursing students. So it is important to create knowledge among III year Bsc.(N) students by conducting awareness programme on colostomy irrigation procedure.
